Philosophy

The Philosophy is “simply to simplify.” Let me simplify that a little more for you. Bruce’s whole J.K.D. theory is basically, “ Don’t be like the painter who is constantly adding paint to the canvas; but more like the sculptor who is constantly chiseling away the non essentials until his master piece is revealed.” Art is an expression of the self. The more complicated and restricted a art/style is, the less the opportunity for the true expression of ones original sense of freedom and creativity. The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stages of development. Should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them then we will become bound by their limitations. Remember you are expressing the technique not doing the technique.” You should be like a mirror to your opponent. Respond like sound/echo. Our approach is not to make you a cloned robot of any system or style; on the contrary , you’ll be an individual, free flowing, spontaneous, and direct fighting entity. The understanding and physical look of JKD is different from person to person. It’s an art of just being yourself.

Principals/Concepts of Jeet Kune DO

The principle will guide you to find the technique and how to use it, and the technique should be a practical illustration of the principles:

  • Simplicity… Daily minimize instead of daily increase. Why block and then hit, when you can block + hit simultaneous. Why block + hit simultaneously when you can intercept.
  • Directness… No passive moves, every move should cause pain.
  • Adaptability… Being able to deal with the unknown, spontaneously.
  • Economy of motion/energy… Controlling muscle contractions, and mental tension during the execution of all movements. With your fist, forearm, bicep and triceps muscles flexed, it’;s the equivalent of going 100mph with the emergency brake on. Or, like trying to swat a fly with your fist.
  • Broken Rhythm – Broken Rhythm – Broken Rhythm…Timing is rhythm. Now if your opponent can’t time you, just imagine.
  • Aliveness…Training with a resisting opponent.
  • Primary targets… Eyes, throat, groin, knee cap.
  • Dominant/strong side forward…If your right handed than your right side would be forward, the opposite goes for lefties. It’s stronger, faster, more accurate, more reliable, and your more confident with it than your weak side.
  • Brim of fire line….Staying just inches away from your opponents reach.
  • 80% of all attacks are with the lead side of the body… Because lead your weapons are closer to the opponent than your rear side.
  • Hand/foot moves first …We strive not to telegraph our intention. Look at it this way, if you want to hit him move your punching hand first. If you want to kick him move your foot first.
  • Longest weapon to nearest target…Even his kicks and punches are targets.
  • Training of Attributes… Training scientifically, not impulsively.
